The total value traded in a market over a period, usually quoted over 24 hours.
Why it matters when you trade
Volume measures interest, not tradability, and it is the most easily faked number in crypto. Wash trading inflates it, one whale rotation can dominate it, and it says nothing about the shape of the book right now. Use it to rank attention and to sanity-check a breakout; use depth to decide what you can actually trade.
Worked example
Two tokens both report $5M of 24-hour volume. One traded across 40,000 fills, the other across 60 — the second is one desk moving inventory, not a market.
