What it means

The live list of every resting buy and sell order for a market, sorted by price.

Why it matters when you trade

The book is the market's memory of intent. Bids stack below the current price, asks above it, and the gap between the best of each is the spread. Reading it tells you what your order will actually cost and where other participants have decided price matters. It also lies constantly: resting orders can be pulled in milliseconds, so a wall of size at a round number is as often a bluff as a defence.

Worked example

Best bid 68,410 for 4 BTC, next 68,405 for 11 BTC; best ask 68,415 for 2 BTC, next 68,420 for 9 BTC. A market buy for 6 BTC clears the 2 at 68,415 and 4 at 68,420 — your fill is not 68,415.
